When purchasing any dog is it is a long commitment that can range from ten to twenty years in some cases. There are many things to consider before choosing a breed for you or your family
Size is important. Do you know if you want a lap dog, or a big dog. Maybe one in the middle.
Do you own your own house? Or do you rent? Renting is much harder to own a large dog. Many places have a weight or size limit. If you do not own, be sure to check out the requirements where you live first.
Activity level is another factor to consider along with the amount of time you have to spend on training and grooming.
The Coton de Tulear is a small companion dog and is very sturdy for a small dog.
I have clients who walk morning and night (2 x a day) with their Cotons. I have people who are trail walkers and very out door people. Then, I have people who just want a companion dog and or a couch potato. My point here is, the Coton acclimates very well to your environment. Just as any athlete, a dog must be conditioned before taking on heavy activity.
The coton averages approximately 8to18 lbs, it depends on the breeder and their lines.
The Coton has a long coat and requires grooming. If kept in a long coat, grooming the Coton is very time consuming. Most pet people keep their dog in a puppy cut which makes grooming very easy.
Coton de tulears have the reputation of a clown and are very happy go lucky.
They are companion dogs and want to please their owners and be with you.
The lifespan of a Coton is 14 to 16 years.

The Coton is know as a little clown. They are packed with personality and have a cheerful personality. They are a happy go lucky little dogs that love their family. I say , “they are like a big dog in a little dog package”. In this day and age, with people living on smaller amounts of land, this dog makes a great match. The coton can do just about anything a larger breed can do. They love to swim, play ball, go for walks, or just cuddle up on your lap. We include our dogs in everything we do. They love going boating with us, to the beach and everything else we do.
The coton is not a barking breed, but will let you know when someone is around. They do think they are big watch dogs. They are not an aggressive breed, and are a wonderful companion dog
Even tho the Coton has this clownish nature, they are a very intelligent breed and and also very quick on his feet. They love to dance on their back feet, and can do many tricks to please you.
The Coton is an affectionate, loving, caring dog who will bring much joy into your life.

Your family is going to be living with this dog for a long , long time, so you need to make sure the breed that you are thinking about has a personality you wish for and one you and your family can all live with. Do you want a dog that is active, or not so active? A dog that is easily trained, or strong-willed? A dog that is friendly to everyone he meets, or one that is protective of family but stand offish toward strangers? A dog that needs a lot of attention from family members, and lots of activity to prevent him from becoming bored and destructive,( know as a working dog) or a dog that is content to be left alone during the day?
Puppies are adorable of course, who can resist them, but they grow quickly-and some of them grow large. Find out how large-in height and weight-that cute puppy will become before you bring him home. Remember that larger dogs require more food and space-is your yard or living room big enough to meet his needs? And keep in mind that some little dogs still need lots of room to run around and burn off energy.
All dogs need to be groomed regularly to stay healthy and clean; most dogs will shed. But some dogs shed profusely all year round; some shed in clumps for a few weeks; some dogs shed only a little bit. Long-coated dogs are beautiful to look at, but require a lot of effort to stay that way. Short-coated dogs are easier to care for, but may still shed, and may require protection in cold or wet weather. Dogs with fancy trims may need professional grooming. Decide how much dog hair you're willing to put up with, and how much time and energy you can afford, when you're deciding which breed is right for you.
In general, there is no significant difference in temperament between male and female dogs. If you are getting a dog for a pet, you will want to have your dog spayed or neutered, which will eliminate most minor differences anyway. If you plan to show or breed your dog, you must be vigilant about preventing unwanted breedings by keeping your intact male safely confined to your house or yard, and by keeping your intact female away from other dogs when she comes into heat twice yearly.Most breeders only sell with a spay / neuter contract.
I find Coton de Tulear males to be more laid back and lovable than the females.
Some breeds may be prone to hereditary diseases or conditions.This can be very expensive, so you need to make sure the breed you are thinking about is one that you can afford in the future, not just the purchase price. Many breeds can be screened for certain conditions, such as hip or eye problems; this certification should be available to you when you go to look at a puppy. Being educated about the health considerations of your chosen breed can help you to avoid or alleviate future problems.
You may also think about going to a few dog shows or dog events. This will give you an opportunity to view firsthand view of many breeds. In addition to seeing a variety of dogs, you will have a chance to talk with dedicated breeders, people concerned with the welfare and advancement of their chosen breed.
